The all-female tribute band Lez Zeppelin was born. It's still going strong and touring the world 17 years later and has even won the approval of Jimmy Page himself. But when Lez Zeppelin were putting their first setlists together back in , 'Stairway to Heaven' wasn't on the list.
It's not just the guitar playing or the vocals or the message. In , two years after the band broke up in the wake of drummer John Bonham's death, Christian televangelists in America began to claim the song contained secret Satanic messages that could be heard when the record was played backwards.
Led Zeppelin was an easy target - the band had helped create the stereotype of "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll". The use of narcotics in the band was rife, Bonham drank himself to death, and the band was renowned for their contingent of groupies, which spawned the infamous "mud shark" incident and Page's disturbing relationship with a teenage girl.
On top of that Page was renowned for his interest in the occult and mysticism, particularly the works of controversial occultist Aleister Crowley. While the backmasking claims were denied and patently ridiculous , they persisted. Led Zeppelin has more than 20 songs in their back catalogue "that consisted, in whole or part, of pre-existing songs, melodies, or lyrics", as Wikipedia puts it. While these pre-existing pieces have sometimes been credited, other times they haven't, and have resulted in lawsuits.
The matter was eventually resolved in favour of Led Zeppelin in , in a ruling that rewrote US copyright law, as well as putting the song back in the news. Led Zeppelin reunions after John Bonham's death have been few and far between, but the question of "will they play 'Stairway'? It was also at the heart of a massive band argument prior to their performance at a gig to mark the 40th anniversary of Atlantic Records - the band, which included John Bonham's son Jason on drums, wanted to play 'Stairway,' Plant did not.
The last time Led Zeppelin played live, again with Jason Bonham on drums, was at the O2 Arena in London in December at a concert to honour the passing of Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records and friend of the band. To the surprise of Page and Jones, Plant agreed to play 'Stairway' - buried in the middle of the set - despite having spent the previous 30 years trying to hide from the song.
Ash Naylor said the song refuses to die, despite new waves of musical trends over the past 50 years temporarily rendering sweeping rock epics "obsolete". With all its narrative storytelling and grand build-ups and releases, the album comes off as cinematic at times.
The return of country elements to her sound, the catchy pop hooks and her signature honest storytelling make the album a perfect accumulation of her signature elements. It has everything you could ask in a pop album: excellent hooks, vibrant melodies and the extraordinary songwriting that can always be expected from Taylor. Produced mostly by pop giant Max Martin, it surprisingly goes beyond sounding like every other mids pop record. The fact that it still feels so fresh shows one of the most important qualities of pop music done right — timelessness.
I could go further into all the reasons why this is such a great album, but they have been said before and honestly it just feels redundant at this point. I had an equally enjoyable time. Taylor has an album for everything — the girlish spirit of first love and first loss, the stinging hurt of real heartbreak, intricate storytelling and every emotion and experience in between.
It's hard to get enough of. With a discography as extensive as Taylor Swift's, the artistry I appreciate and romanticize over the years are variations of each other depending on where I am in life. Most of it has to do whatever it was I was going through and what my unsettled body felt like trying to find its place.
It's the feeling of listening to the simple drum beat that sounds like assurance, before you hear chords that sound like yearning. And accompanying them, words that make love and pain and life and everything in between feel pleasurably unrestrained. This song and most of this album are some of my favorite words ever written. Swift finds a way to make life seem exuberant and love excruciatingly intense.
Overall, the album, about heartbreak, sometimes failed optimism and growing up feels like a coming-of-age film. Even the melancholic emotions it writes about are framed in tenderness and zeal. When hopelessness needed to be fought with hope using, yes you guessed it, the internet.
When hope meant scrolling on Tumblr and seeing the many lives that I wanted to live and needing some way to reach a feeling of permanent nostalgia, the kind that wavers on mild euphoria. How could I feel anything like that in my tiny dingy bedroom, or anywhere for that matter? The songwriting is rooted in fiction and shows Swift expanding into utilizing allegorical writing steeped in motifs and esoteric writing devices. The winter nostalgia and imagery is intentional and can be felt interwoven throughout the production.
