Why were the nineties so good

It made them work and we called it jugaad. The elderly DTC buses on road and government offices also worked thanks to this principle.

Believe it or faint, there were no mobile telephones once. Those who had cordless phones would go flaunt them on balconies and outside their houses. Then, mobile phones came and hegemony of cordless phone owners ended. Mobile phone owners were worse. You went abroad. They were way better than anything you ever got in India.

They had an accent, they got all the attention and they made fun of you for living in Indyeah. Once upon a time before generators and hours electricity backup made them uncool, we had power cuts. And unlike now, when power cuts mean sweat and mosquitoes, this was a magical time which meant all play and no studies.

When light actually came back on, a big boo rose from the playground. And those of us who studied with candles got a halo, literally so. Our lives were not ruled by iPads, laptops and smartphones. Our play time was not spent in front of playstations or Xbox. Instead, summer holidays meant playing games such as hopscotch, hide and seek or cricket in the park.

Sometimes at 2pm on a June afternoon and sometimes at 8pm on a chilly December night. Not bragging but did it make us more inventive than the smart kids today? Hell, yeah. Nobody went to Thailand. Nobody did Dubai. And Switzerland? Only Yash Chopra took his stars there. Instead, people went to visit relatives during summers. Shimla and Manali used to be the height of thinking big in terms of destination and a Goa trip would have sufficed for five summers.

There were unlucky souls whose mamaji and buaji lived in the same city. This was a complex enterprise. Going to theatre was a rare event which took place once in 6 months.

Friends were invited as you discussed the merits of the film over nimbu paani. Nobody understood a thing American English was yet to catch on but it made you the star. No matter what genre — rock, rap, pop, punk, country — the music was just incredible. The Fashion. Plaid was everywhere; somehow the work clothes of outdoorsmen became a fashion staple for every Gen Xer. More than that, the 90s promoted function over fashion. High-waisted ripped jeans, bike shorts when walking, windbreakers, bandannas, and combat boots; 90s clothes were more than style statements, they were also really comfortable.

That might be why many believe it is the most unfashionable decade. However, I know I looked cute in my light-up sneakers, pink overalls with one hook down, of course and backwards Chicago Bulls cap. Thus, the 90s saw the rise of the most popular, longest running shows ever. If you think the romantic escapades of Kim Kardashian are a doozy, the 90s had its fair share of tabloid-worthy love affairs.

Even though most of these pairings didn't survive, pictures last forever. Remember slap bracelets? What about Lisa Frank and Trapper keepers?

The 90s can be described in terms of the fads that swept the nation for there were many. The little stuffed animals caused frenzies across malls, as collectors believed they would one day be worth millions. The Macarena is the gift that keeps on giving, inspiring anyone who hears its hypnotic rhythm jump to their feet and shake it. The 90s saw the birth of an invention that changed all of our lives; the Walkman. Music you can hear while you walk without carrying a boombox?

A bona fide miracle. Not to mention car phones that seemed minuscule in comparison to cell phones the size of your head.
